Schoolyard Habitat Project - Restore: Habitat
1. What students LEARNED and how
Students in the 4th grade participated in an Arbor Day program led by the Lexington County Soil & Water Conservation District where they learned about the parts of a tree, their functions, and the importance of trees in the environment. Approximately 40 volunteers from youth to adult came from Cub Scout Pack 518 and Boy Scout Troop 518 in Red Bank, SC to plant trees on campus. They learned about the importance of trees and tree planting and care from Mr. Schnabel, STEM Coach at Deerfield Elementary.
2. What students ACCOMPLISHED (and how you measured results)
4th grade students planted 6 bald cypress trees during the Arbor Day program. The Scout volunteers planted approximately 100 more trees of 10 different species at two sites on campus The outdoor classroom site had 20 trees planted. The second site (1 acre open field behind the school) had approximately 86 trees planted of 10 different species by the Scout volunteers. Trees were mulched and the grass between the trees is being cut to reduce competition for the first year. Results will be reported to Palmetto Pride because some trees were obtained through a grant.
3. What students TAUGHT others and how
5th grade students in the Environmental Science club taught the entire 1st grade about the parts of plants and trees, their functions, and how trees benefit the environment through an interactive presentation.
